Risk assessments, training and monitoring

Workplace health-risk assessments

Identify exposure sources, tasks and affected employees. Evaluate potential health effects, exposure patterns and existing controls, then document findings, priorities and recommended actions.

Information, instruction and training

Help employees and supervisors understand the hazards, assessment findings, safe work practices, exposure controls and correct use and limitations of protective equipment.

Specialist exposure monitoring

Where necessary, monitoring is provided by sub-consulting occupational hygienists, using appropriately approved inspection authorities where required. Measurements and reports help establish exposure levels and guide further controls.

Occupational hygiene assessment scope

Noise exposure

Assess noise sources, work activities, exposed employees and existing controls. Support training and action plans under the Noise Exposure Regulations. Arrange specialist noise exposure monitoring where indicated.

Hazardous chemical agents

Assess exposure risks from hazardous dust, fumes, vapours, gases and liquids. Review relevant safety data sheets, work processes and controls, and identify needs for training and specialist air monitoring.

Ergonomics

Assess ergonomic risks associated with manual handling, repetitive tasks, awkward postures and work design. Recommend improvements and provide training suited to the tasks and employees concerned.

Asbestos

Support asbestos identification and inventory review, asbestos risk assessments, awareness training and management recommendations within the agreed scope and required competence. Arrange specialist sampling or monitoring where necessary.

Physical agents

Assess relevant exposure risks such as heat, cold, vibration, lighting and non-ionising radiation. Recommend controls, training and specialist exposure monitoring appropriate to the agent and work activity.

Industry-specific assessments

Tailor assessments to construction, manufacturing, engineering, warehouses, logistics, agriculture, offices and other workplaces. The scope follows the actual hazards and applicable legislation at the workplace.

Assessments aligned with applicable regulations

The assessment scope is matched to the applicable requirements, including:

  • Noise Exposure Regulations: noise exposure risk assessment under Regulation 7.
  • Hazardous Chemical Agents Regulations: assessment of exposure under Regulation 5.
  • Ergonomics Regulations: ergonomic risk assessment under Regulation 6.
  • Asbestos Abatement Regulations: asbestos risk assessment under Regulation 5.
  • Physical Agents Regulations: physical agent exposure risk assessment under Regulation 6.

Assessments and specialist work must be undertaken by persons with the competence and approvals required for the particular scope. A generic risk assessment is not a substitute for a hazard-specific assessment or exposure monitoring required by the applicable regulations.

What your organisation receives

  • A clearly defined assessment scope, exposure sources and affected work activities.
  • A documented assessment report with prioritised recommendations.
  • Practical control measures and an action plan for implementation.
  • Training suited to the hazards and employees concerned.
  • Specialist monitoring reports where monitoring forms part of the agreed scope.
  • Support to interpret monitoring findings, review controls and update assessments.

DEL inspection and Contravention Notice support

The Department of Employment and Labour (DEL) can issue a Contravention Notice where an employer fails to meet applicable requirements. We help organisations identify assessment and training gaps, plan corrective actions and organise supporting records. If you have received a notice, share the cited requirements and deadline so the scope can address the findings. A report alone does not replace implementation of the required controls.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between assessment and monitoring?

A risk assessment identifies and evaluates health risks arising from the work. Exposure monitoring measures exposure levels using suitable methods and equipment. Where required, monitoring results inform the assessment and decisions about controls.

Who provides the monitoring?

Exposure monitoring is provided by specialist occupational hygienists engaged as sub-consultants where necessary. Appropriately approved inspection authorities are used where required by the applicable regulations. The provider and monitoring scope are confirmed in the quotation.

Is asbestos removal included?

This service focuses on assessments, training and coordination of specialist monitoring. It does not imply asbestos removal or abatement contracting. Any such work requires a separately agreed scope and the required registration and competence.

Can assessments be done remotely?

Records can be reviewed remotely where appropriate. Site visits and specialist measurements are arranged when the assessment or monitoring scope requires them.
